Book Arts Workshops at Chester Creek Press

Workshops are from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm, with a 45 minute break for lunch at noon. Bring your food and eat it here, or there are some excellent eateries in Chestertown, within a few minutes drive.
Materials are included in the price of the workshops. Old clothes are appropriate to wear, and maybe an apron too. The paste paper workshop in particular can get messy (it’s more fun that way) and although the pigments we use should wash out, clothes you don’t care about are good. Paper making can be wet work so waterproof shoes or sneakers are best for your feet.

A $20 deposit is requested at the time of registration. The deposit is refundable up to 7 days before the date of the workshop.

2009 Workshop Schedule

Thursday - July 23 INTRODUCTION TO BOOKBINDING
Learn the basic skills needed to make bindings for albums, journals, or other book arts projects. Through a series of bookbindings, moving from simple to complex, participants will create several books that will develop skills in tearing, folding, sewing and gluing both paper and hardcover bindings. Emphasis will be on good craft techniques and working in harmony with materials and their different properties. $75.00
Thursday - July 30 JAPANESE CLOTH COVERED BOX
Learn to make a hinged-lid storage box for tea, pencils, pens, or other small objects. Materials used will be Japanese Book cloth and various colored art papers. $75.00
Saturday - August 1 HAND PAPER MAKING
The paper maker’s craft is centuries old, but the finest papers in the world are still made in much the same way as always. Using small scale professional equipment we will make sheets of gorgeous cotton rag paper. In addition there will be demonstrations and discussions about making paper at home to use in your own book arts projects. $75.00
Thursday - August 6 PASTE PAPER WORKSHOP
Paste papers are decorated papers made by covering a dampened sheet of paper with a mixture of paste and colored pigment and then working the surface with a variety of tools to create patterns. More fun than finger painting and you can use the sheets you make for book covers, unique paper for wrapping presents, to cover bricks for door stops, and general book arts use. $75.00
Thursday - August 20 ETHIOPIAN STYLE BINDING
The Ethiopian style binding is based on an ancient North African design. It features a hard cover with an exposed spine and elegant chain stitch sewing. This binding opens completely flat – an excellent book for drawing or journaling. Some binding or box making experience would be helpful but not necessary. $75.00
